In Delhi NCR, cars running on diesel more than 10 years old and those running on petrol more than 15 years old have been prohibited from plying for many years now, following a National Green Tribunal directive in 2015 and an order from the Supreme Court in 2018. The implementation has hardly been consistent. In August 2025, the Supreme Court instructed authorities not to take any coercive measures against such people, and in December 2025, it instructed that such protection is applicable only to BS-4 and above vehicles, while coercive measures can be taken against others.
